Rest easy: Canada’s leading mattress retailer announces comprehensive mattress recycling program in Ontario

Sleep Country Canada strengthens 12-year commitment to environmental responsibility

November 3, 2008 (Toronto, ON) - More than 30,000 mattresses will be diverted from Ontario landfill sites every year as a result of a comprehensive mattress recycling program launched by Sleep Country Canada today.

“We are proud to be the first mattress retailer in Ontario to commit to a comprehensive recycling program,” says Christine Magee, president of Sleep Country Canada. “This effort will divert thousands of mattresses from landfills every year in this province.”

Sleep Country will pay a fee-per-mattress to a Toronto-based recycling depot to break down beds into their fundamental components. All elements, including cotton, metal, polyurethane foam, wood, polyester and other fabrics, will be sold to salvage companies for reuse.

In Ontario alone, it is estimated that every year more than 30,000 mattresses and box springs will be recycled - and diverted from landfills - because of Sleep Country’s recycling initiative.

When Sleep Country delivers new mattresses to customers in Ontario, the company takes old ones away. These mattresses are evaluated with the gently used ones being given to families in need, through their Donated Bed program, which has been in operation for more than 12 years.

This year it is anticipated that more than 20,000 of these gently used mattresses will be provided to Ontario families in need. “As members of this community, we are excited and proud to lead the industry in mattress recycling across the province,” says Magee.
