Christine
Christine Magee is the president and co-founder of Sleep Country Canada, the largest retailer of mattresses in Canada, providing outstanding in-store and home delivery service from over 220 corporate-owned stores in 17 regional markets.
Christine believes strongly in sharing knowledge and staying involved in the community. She is frequently asked to speak at conferences, business associations, chambers of commerce and schools about issues pertaining to leadership and effective management strategies. Over the years, Christine has also taken on an active role in mentoring students through her involvement with Ivey School of Business, 20 Under 20, working with young professionals through Women’s Executive Network. Christine is an Honorary Chairperson for the Hamilton YWCA, and a proud member of the Selection Committee for YWCA – Women of Distinction – 2009.
She is a champion of the many charitable initiatives supported by Sleep Country Canada, including the Donated Bed Program, Give a Kid a Coat, Backpack for Kids, Food Drives in support of the Salvation Army, Adopt a Sheep in support of the Children’s Miracle Network.
In addition to her charitable work, she is an active member of the Women’s President Organization, as well as a member of the Advisory Council for the Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. In recent years, Christine has served as a former Chair of the Rouge Valley Health System Foundation’s Vital Links Campaign from 2001 to 2005, Honorary Chair of the Learning Partnership in 2002, member of the Honorary Council of the Labour of Love Campaign at the Rouge Valley System Foundation from 2006 to 2008, served as a Cabinet Member for the United Way of Greater Toronto in 2001 and 2002 and the Account Executive Retail Division of the 2006 United Way Campaign.
Over the years, Christine’s leadership and foresight has led her to be recognized and receive numerous awards. Most recently Sleep Country was awarded the Canadian Home Furnishings Alliance 2009 Retail of the Year Award. In November 2007, she received an award in the professional category from Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Awards. In 2006, Christine received an Honorary Doctorate of Commerce from Ryerson University, as well as the CIRAS Henry Singer Award for Exceptional Leadership in Retailing and Services from the University of Alberta School of Business. In 2005, Christine received the Laurier Outstanding Business Leader Award from Wilfrid Laurier University. Sleep Country Canada was also inducted into the Marketing Hall of Legends in 2005 and the Retail Council of Canada Hall of Fame in the same year. In 1998, Christine was named Ontario Entrepreneur of the Year, Retail/Wholesale by the Financial Post. She was also recognized as one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 in 1997.
